FAQs

What are the dates/times of the program?

The program starts on July 6, 2020 and ends July 31, 2020. It runs on all weekdays between these dates from 9am - 4pm. Participants are expected to attend all days of the program.

How will COVID-19 affect FinTech Focus? Will the program still run if COVID-19 persists into the summer?

The number one priority of the FinTech Focus team is the safety of our participants. If COVID-19 prevents us from hosting students in-person, we are considering a number of options including running the program virtually. If the program happens virtually, participants would need a quiet place to work with access to Wi-Fi in order to participate. A laptop will be provided to all participants (shipped to participants’ locations before the program begins).

When is the application due?

Applications are due at 11:59pm EST on Monday, April 6, 2020.

What is the cost of the program?

There is no cost to participate in the program. Additionally, participants will be paid a total stipend of $2,400, paid in two installments.

If I'm not from the New York City metro area, can I attend the program?

We accept applications from students that do not attend a New York City metro area high school. However, in order to be eligible for the program you must be able to attend the four-week program in person. Please be advised that housing is not provided through the program, and you will be responsible for securing your own accommodations and transportation to New York.

Is transportation covered?

Yes. Participants in the program will receive a transportation stipend roughly equivalent to the cost of a monthly metrocard to cover the expense of travel.

Where is the program located?

FinTech Focus will be located in the Manhattan, Jersey City, or Downtown Brooklyn offices of the five sponsoring organizations: Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, and Wells Fargo. Once accepted into the program, participants will be notified of the site to which they’ll be reporting.

Are meals provided?

Yes, breakfast and lunch will be catered daily. We will be sending a survey prior to the start of the program to collect any dietary needs and/or restrictions.

What is the curriculum?

The curriculum is project-based, and focuses on web development with Python. Languages and technologies covered are HTML, CSS, Python, Flask, and Databases. By the end of the course, students will have built their own full-stack web application. This class is not a replacement for a college computer science course - rather, it gives students a practical introduction to building real-world applications. Students will find that the skills they learn in this program will continue to be useful in college-level computer science courses. In addition to coding, participants will learn about the Financial Technology (FinTech) industry and also gain a foundational understanding of corporate banking/finance.

What happens after the summer program?

After the immersive four-week program, students will join an active alumni network where they’ll gain access to webinars, weekly office hours, events, and more. The FinTech Focus team hopes to provide support and guidance to students as they move through college and begin their professional careers.

Application

Please complete the following application form by April 6, 2020 at 11:59PM EST. This is the first of two rounds of the FinTech Focus application process. You can expect to hear back in a few weeks. Thank you!

NOTE: We are monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely and the safety of our participants is our main priority. At this time, we are intending to run this program as planned this July as an in-person program. However, we are prepared to transition the program to a virtual format if need be (or if circumstances dictate). Applicants who qualify for the second round will be asked to indicate if they are only open to participating in-person, or if they are open to a virtual experience as well. If the program does happen virtually, students would need a quiet place to work with access to Wi-Fi. A laptop will be provided to all participants (shipped to participants’ locations before the program begins).
